The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is a system used to evaluate an individuals movement pattern quality. The Functional Movement Screen consists of a series of simple tests with a grading system which aids in assessing and identifying movement patterns in individuals that may serve as predispositions to injury.
The Functional Movement Screen provides an evaluation option that relates closely to how an individual is performing in training. The tests are improved by working on variations of the skills tested.
The test is comprised of seven fundamental movement patterns that require a balance of mobility and stability. These fundamental movement patterns are designed to provide observable performance of basic locomotor, manipulative and stabilizing movements. The tests place the individual in positions where weaknesses and imbalances become noticeable if appropriate stability and mobility is not utilized.
Many individuals who perform at very high levels during activities are unable to perform these simple movements. These individuals are likely utilizing compensatory movement patterns during their activities. These compensatory movements lack efficiency, contribute to poor biomechanics, and may translate into a greater predisposition to injury.
By utilizing the FMS to identify movement predispositions and compensations, we can better target these areas with customized exercises and activities in order to help reduce the chance of injury.
